The final week! This is another piece that was done completely on my drawing tablet, which I have started to grow much more used to and am really starting to enjoy. I have learned what the buttons on the pen do! If I am drawing, then I can press the button on the side of pen, and it will automatically switch to the easer setting, it makes things a bit easier and faster.
I have been in a bit of a creative block, so I have no real thought process behind the dragon. I asked my friend what I should draw, and she told me a dragon, so I did a little sketch and I liked how it looked and then I have no idea what colors or design I wanted on it. After a little bit of thinking I drew on a couple of scales and added a couple more horns. I had no idea what color scheme I wanted so I just looked up an art generator and kept randomizing until I find colors I liked together, and I went with that. I feel like the design is really bland and boring, but I really like the image. I feel like if I had more time and energy then I could actually make a really cool and well-designed dragon and I feel like I probably will at some point (which may possibly be posted and my art account on Instagram @thesadsushi). Well, this will be my final blog post for genius hour, and I will say this was a lot of fun and a good learning experience on multiple fronts. Not only did I improve my art skills, I think, but I think I also learned some valuable time-management skills. `

This is my first drawing that I've posted that I have done on my computer with my drawing table! I got my table I think two Christmases ago from my Pops who has always supported me with art, he actually tried to convince me to take lessons and go to an art school. Drawing with the tablet can be a little weird sometimes, the tablet itself doesn't have a screen it's just a black square with a few buttons on the side (which I actually have no clue how to work) so you have to slide the pen as it corresponds with the computer screen. So, you are drawing on the tablet, but you have to look at the computer screen, it can be a little weird sometimes especially for me because I write/draw with the paper sideways most of the time and I can't do that when I am working with the tablet.
Anyways, this drawing was inspired by my friend. I asked her what I should draw, and she just started saying words, she said cave, water, mermaid, eyes, bioluminescence, etc. So, there is a good chance I may take this cave with a little pool and add some sort of creature or put a mermaid in the pool but I'm not entirely sure yet. I had a lot of fun playing around with overlays with this drawing. And making the water was so much fun. I actually used the watercolor brushes when doing this which was interesting considering how much I use real watercolors. I'm not sure what I am going to for the last week, I may just add on to this or create something completely new. Happy Mother's Day to all of the amazing Moms, like mine and my nana. Every year since I can remember I always make my mom and my nana a card for Mother's Day. I do not buy cards I make them, one of my all-time favorites I've made is for my aunt who also happens to be a pretty cool mom too. But my aunt's birthday is on Groundhog Day so of course that means that every year she gets a groundhog participating in some sort of birthday related activity. This year I am pretty sure it was a groundhog with a party hat with a bundle of balloons. Basically, this was a long way of telling you that I followed tradition again this year for both my mom and my nana, but my nana's card was a little different this year.
I know that I am making a certain group of people upset right now. For a little background information, my nana is the biggest UNC fan I have ever met. And because my mom is so awesome, she has a lot of friends, one of those friends is a sponsor for UNC and he also adores my mom. So not only did he give her the chance to meet Phil Ford, but he gave her a ball signed by four of the current team members (I forgot the names). Considering we have dogs, and my nana does not have any in the house my mom gave the ball to her, and I gave her the perfect card that any UNC fan could ask for, I think I did their logo pretty good considering I was working with watercolors that tend to run a lot. This week I was given a request, albeit a strange one but a request, nonetheless. My best friend's little sister who at this point I consider like my own little sister wanted a unicorn but a deer with a fluffy tail and they had to be pink and live in a magical forest. Which honestly was very descriptive for an 8-year-old. So, with that somewhat odd and descriptive request I made whatever you would call the creature down below.
I used a mixture of acrylic and watercolor paints and just outlined in a pen. The background was quite fun, I know really want to paint a ton of spindly trees with more mystical colored leaves and I think a big mushroom forest would be a lot of fun too. Doing the bushes in this painting was so fun and relaxing and the bushes saved me from having to do weird horse/deer legs which I was quite happy about. I like how the background colors are all cool colors while the pink would be considered a warm color. I think it just makes the creature pop out more while also keeping the mystical forest theme. It is hard to tell on camera but the tail and mane(?) are sparkly which Zoey, the little sister, loved. If I would change something about the painting I would probably go and add more trees in the background and Zoey also said that the place looked like it would have fireflies so if she will let me have the painting back, I may add fireflies This week I have decided to post myself portrait we had to create in art class. I know that it wasn't technically for genius hour, but it is art and something I put quite a lot of time into. I have never really liked making self-portraits, weather realistic or not, but I have also never really liked drawing realistically but I actually kind of like how this turned out. The photo of myself that I used was taken outside and it make my hair look a little weird and brought out interesting shadows. I had a lot of fun trying to put as much detail into this as I could. I didn't want to try and make myself look any different than how I looked in the picture. My art teacher said that a lot of times when students do these, they get rid of blemishes or make their nose smaller and what not, so I really tried not to do that. I added any pimples and blemishes I had with on the picture, the scar under my eyebrow, my horrible eye bags, and I had eyeliner on in the picture so that was true to the photo as well.
I have only ever drawn people with a more cartoony style, and I have drawn a few of my friends and random people I have found on Pinterest. The only thing I've ever really drawn realistically is animals, a couple of hands, and like every other girl on their math homework when they get bored eyes. But I honestly do think this turned out pretty well and I got quite a few compliments on it. This week I finished a little digital piece I have been working on. I'm not super, super proud of it but I feel like for someone that doesn't do much digital art it turned out pretty okay. I will say that it is much more relaxing to do art digitality because with painting and markers and pencils I have lots of clean up usually while with digital art all I have to do is turn off my phone or computer. I will say however that colors work differently on digital art, and I know that sounds weird, but I feel like if you've done digital art then you understand. The whole color thing made this piece a considerable amount harder. I can't tell if it is because I just simply have access to an entire color wheel and could probably create endless variations of colors while with paints and pencils and markers you can blend colors together but for the most part you are confined to what you have. I am thinking because of the shock/difficulty of how colors are in digital art I may try to play around with colors and the different types of overlays you can do before attempting to create something else.
I would really like to get better with shading, I feel like my line art isn't horrible, but I would wish that the colors and shading were better. I do like being able to add an overall over all of without having to worry that the entire piece would be messed up. Also, hair. I think the hair looks so bad and how the fingers just end in places, it looks messy to me, and I would like to get better at that. I think that making the lines thinner would benefit the drawing. I would also like to add that doing the eyes was probably my favorite part of this entire thing. This week I have decided to take a small break from digital and work with a medium I am much more comfortable with. I'm not entirely sure what it is about watercolors that I enjoy so much but they are by far my favorite way to create anything. I will say however it is nice to be able to just be able to remove lines without messing up the entire piece when I do digital art. But I feel like that is the same reason I like watercolor so much because with watercolor you can make things messy and the majority of the time it looks pretty alright. Lately I have been loving watercolor with messy line art something about it is so pleasing to me and it makes trying to create something much less stressful than it normally is.
I'm not really sure the inspiration for this painting but the goat was going to originally have two heads, but that idea got scrapped after I tried, and failed, drawing a second head about five times. Instead, I went for curvy little horns. Another thing to note is that I wasn't going to add eyes at all, but I enjoyed the color I mixed to put in the goat's eye so much that I wanted it to be incorporated with the painting more but wasn't quite sure where or how to do that. After sitting for about 5 minutes, I was just like well it was his eye color so let's just make a bunch of goat eyes in the background and I enjoyed how it turned out. This painting gives me a creepy or ominous vibe which would typically not work with such a warm color pallet, but my mother says that has been my style for a while now. On one of the paintings for my header is something I made a few years ago, it's this small piece of paper with somewhat gore-y images with a pastel color pallet, to this day it remains one of my favorite paintings and I still have it in my room. I understand the style is not for everyone but I've been fascinated with supernatural and somewhat spooky things since I can remember so making things like this is very fun for me so I would expect stuff like this in the next few weeks. This past week I have been very busy with various things but I have been trying to do a little bit of art at night to try and wind down before bed.
On March 25th a new installment of some of my favorite games so I started working on a drawing of the main character, Tiny Tina, off and on throughout the past couple of days. Hopefully I will make some art of the actual character I play as in the game. I have unfortunately not posted anything on Instagram recently and I think I may need to lower my standards of what I can post on that account because I feel like I can't post unfinished projects but I don't want to try to rush through things and post something I'm not happy with. So my official goal is to get something finished and posted this week! This week I focus more on painting and animal portraits. I still did a couple of anatomy sketches in my sketch book and I think I am becoming a little more comfortable. Originally my plan was to focus more on painting pet portraits this week but my time became very limited so I did more sketches and my portraits are only still in the beginning stages. I am aiming to have them done by this week sometime and hopefully be able to post a finish product on my Instagram.
The very rough sketches below are of cats that have somewhat recently passed away. From left to right it goes Loki, his sister Cleo, and Crystal who was 16 at the time she passed. I hope to have them finish soon and I plan on practicing how to paint a good fur texture a few times before I try to attempt it on these canvases. The grey for Loki is only a base, I plan on doing that for the other tomorrow. This week I didn't feel the best and wasn't really happy with anything I was making, everything seemed to look a bit off or wrong because I'm still trying to work with drawing human anatomy. However I did start to work on some old portrait of my animals who have passed and started working on making a pet portrait for one of my friends.
I knew that I waned to work with digital art more so I had my friend send me a few pictures of her dog, Bella, and I started sketching them out. Because I did so many drawings I did color or line them and left it as a sketch page, I may go back and complete them at some point though. Doing digital art is a lot less stressful in a sense, if I mess up on something I can just press the back space and try again while traditional art I may have to go back and repaint or risk erasing too much of the drawing. My friends birthday is in April and as a part of their present I want to paint them a portrait of Bella on a somewhat large canvas. Doing smaller sketches of her will hopefully prepare more for the painting. I posted the image below on my Instagram, I have one new follower and a few more likes on my posts, I'm hoping this week I will be able to post more constantly. |
